Instructor Profile: Jay Todesco, 2nd Dan

Jay joined Tecumseh TKD in 2001, and attained the ranking of 1st Dan in December 2004, and was awarded 2nd Dan in 2009. He is the Club's Vice-President, as well as the Student/Parent liasion. He began with Tecumseh by bringing his son Matt to class, and sitting on the sidelines twice a week while Matt attended the classes. After two years, he decided to join in as well, and has never looked back. Matt is also a black belt at the club. Here's a conversation with Jay:

What do you love about TKD?
I have two favorite things that keep me coming back to Tae Kwon-Do: The first is simply the exercise. Its fun, demanding at times and has a purpose. Secondly, and probably more importantly, are the people. I've said this a number of times, but the fact that all of the executive and instructors are volunteers speaks volumes for the type of people we attract.

What is your favourite TDK Technique, and why?
I like patterns. They provide an execellent work out and allow you to practice techniques with power and without the necessity of having a partner present.

What advice might you have for younger or new TKD practitioners?
Everyone wants to obtain a black belt as quickly as possible which shouldn't be the focus of Tae Kwon-Do. Its the journey that's important and what you learn and how you develop along the way. The black belt is not the end but simply another point along the road.

What are you favourite pastimes?I like to teach (whether it's Tae Kwon-Do, self defence at schools or law at the University of Calgary) although I have left the University teaching ranks for a few years. I like to spend time with Matt either playing football or just hanging out.

Favourite sports?
I like rugby, football and ball hockey.

Current job/career/studies?
I am senior counsel- international with Nexen Inc. which is a fancy way of saying that I negotiate and draft agreements between my employer, Nexen, and various oil companies or foriegn government to provide for oil and gas exploration and development. I have traveled to over 60 countries in the last 20 years including Iran, Iraq, Cuba, Libya and all over Africa.

Special degrees/awards/certifications?
I have a first aid certificate that was obtained through a program with Nexen.

Any TKD Distinctions?Participant with the most braces and most operations (5 knee operations since 1979 and two broken necks- one in grade 11 wrestling and one in 1980 rugby).
