Here's a conversation with Jason:
What do you love about TKD?
The two things that I love most about TKD are the people firstly and foremost. We have great people running the club and even greater students. For me, it is a joy to see everyone together and I do thing of our club as a big family. The second thing I love most about TKD is the fact that no matter what you do and how far you go, there is always more to be done, more to be perfected. I do not view TKD simply as a sport that you do for purely physical fitness, but I view it as an art fourm which can take a life time to perfect. As our founder General Choi once said, "Tae Kwon Do is a lifestyle".
What is your favourite TDK Technique, and why? My favourite technique in TKD would have to be the flying sidekick. A regular sidekick by itself is a hard, yet powerful and magnificent technique, but as soon as you add and jump and a target a few feet away, well then it is just a beautiful thing. A flying sidekick is a fast, powerful, and majestic looking kick when executed properly and can take years to figure out. For me, it represents the true spirit of TKD, mastering the speed, strength, and aesthetics of our art.
What advice might you have for younger or new TKD practitioners?
The advice that I would have for our younger or newer members is to relax, have fun and be patient. So many new people have the ambitions of coming into TKD and thinking they will be able to learn it in a week or so. I know this because I can remember I used to be one of them. What our new members need to realize is that TKD takes years to master and that you should not come to it just to get a belt or to be able to beat someone up, but to come to have fun, and grow both spiritually and physically. I can safely say that I would not be the person I am today without TKD!
What are you favourite pastimes? My favourite pasttimes include working out, practicing TKD, pursuing interests in my life and just hanging out with my friends and enjoying life.
Favourite sports?
My most favourite sport is obviously TKD, but I also love basketball, and wrestling.
